So often we don’t think very often about how our food reaches our plates. In the most recent century or so, ignorance concerning this “how” has had its advantages: less time that we spend in food preparation, more time spent in other pursuits of the American dream. But in more recent decades, in many instances, this ideal has backfired (just read selections from Upton Sinclair's well known tome "The Jungle"). With Tolsma Pastured Chicken, you are guaranteed an operation with open-ended and transparent communication. As those with agricultural backgrounds, Marisa and I have both taken journeys through ill health maladies and have changed our diets to reflect the more holistic diets that we espouse. Some of our dietetically sourced stops along the way included selections from Weston A. Price Foundation and Sally Fallon’s famous cookbook “Nourishing Traditions,” and Natasha Campbell Mc Bride’s “Gut and Psychology Syndrome” book. We invite you to watch our flocks being raised or inspect our process processing/dressing the birds when you come to pick up.
Holistic Practices
We start with fresh pasture here in Loveland, Colorado that we move the birds on each day. This gives them fresh air, pasture, and the water we feed them is potable, safe for human consumption. From there, the feed that the birds receive is 100% certified organic, non-GMO, non-nitrite, and non-soy, All of this holistic treatment adds to a healthier, meatier carcase weight at processing time. When processing time comes, not only are no outside factors (e.g. feces, uneven heating and cooling of processing water) allowed to alter or contaminate the carcases, but we invite you to view our processing habits for yourself to verify these statements.
